Katie Kovacs has over 15 years of experience working in healthcare settings helping families navigate a wide variety of complex situations. Most recently, Katie has been working as a Deputy for Guardian Assist, serving as a court appointed designee decision maker for several wards and assisting their families with guardianship concerns including care plan development and implementation. Katie has also recently worked as a dialysis clinic Social Worker, helping patients and families cope with the daily challenges of being on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, including applying for Medicare, Medicaid and financial assistance through the American Kidney Fund and the Missouri Kidney Program.
Prior to that, Katie worked at Barnes-Jewish Hospital for seven years as the Social Worker Case Manager for the Surgical Burn Trauma Intensive Care Unit and the Pulmonary Rehab Unit, with additional coverage in the Medical Intensive Care Unit. While at Barnes, a significant aspect of her daily role involved working with patients and families in acute crisis situations, on ventilators, tracheostomies, and other forms of life support to provide psychosocial care for coping with trauma and education on continued care facilities and resources as part of the discharge planning process.
Katie has also worked in Acute Rehab Hospital and Skilled Nursing Facility settings to assist patients and families contending with recovery from strokes, traumatic brain injuries, and spinal cord injuries. Katie brings a wide range of knowledge concerning all levels of healthcare, with a focus on transition management, insurance coverage, and discharge planning, from these experiences. Katie has also had extensive experience with addressing end-of-life care concerns including advanced directives, powers of attorney, palliative and hospice care.
Katie has a Master of Social Work, with a specialization in Gerontology and Management from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. Katie has a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in English from Haverford College in Haverford PA. She is also a Certified Case Manager and is studying to become a Certified National Guardian.
Katie is happily married to her husband Andrew and loves spending time with her family, including two college age children and two Labrador Retrievers. Katie’s hobbies include swimming, doll collecting and photography. Katie’s personal experience as an end-of-life caregiver to both of her parents before their passing continues to inspire her to help others in similar situations have access to the best possible resources and care providers in their time of need.
